[Album of the Week] ‘Covered (The Robert Glasper Trio Recorded Live At Capitol Studios)’ by Robert Glasper

Sometimes I hate myself for being so lazy when it comes to going out to shows. Really wanted to see Robert Glasper last Wednesday night at the El Rey, but chose hanging with my comic book team instead. “Maybe next time” I said.

So…technically this week’s Album of the Week is a constantly prize! Best enjoy it. His Covered Session with the trio at Capitol Records is a laid back experience made for weekends around the house. The iconic musician continues to reinvent his style by tackling renditions of popular R&B/Hip-Hop tracks that he loves like Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, John Legend, Musiq Soulchild, and Bilal alongside the jazz standard “Stella By Starlight.”

Displaying his trademark eclecticism, Glasper also includes tunes by Radiohead and Joni Mitchell, along with a stirring collaboration with legendary singer/activist Harry Belafonte. The Glasper originals on the album include a re-working of “I Don’t Even Care,” a bonus track from Black Radio 2 that featured Macy Gray and Jean Grae.

You’ll notice sweeping movements you know the lyrics too, but instead of spoken words you get magically tickles of the ivory. There are a bunch of surprises you’ll get when listening. Of course, I’m not gonna share those details. Gotta sit against the wall and jam to

Essential Tracks: “Recknor”, “I’m Dying Of Thirst”, “Good Morning”
